MIME PhD Scholarships Awarded in 2015

MIME offers postgraduate students the opportunity to study with some of Australia's leading medical engineering researchers and clinicians.

As part of phase I of the 2015 MIME Seed Fund round, clinicians submitting an unmet clinical need proposal were asked if they would be interested in the project being a PhD scholarship. Additionally, as part of phase II of the 2015 MIME Seed Fund round, researchers were asked to indicate if they would be interested in funding in the form of a PhD scholarship.

As a result, 17 projects were identified as PhD projects and were offered PhD funding. Additionally, 3 summer school projects were also awarded.

As with the 2015 MIME Seed Fund round, we would like to thank all clinicians who submitted an unmet clinical need identifying that the project was a suitable PhD topic and all researchers who submitted a project proposal response. We extend our congratulations to the successful project teams below.

Applications for the PhD scholarships will be welcomed in 2016 via the MIME website www.monash.edu/mime or by contacting Professor Laurence Meagher, Deputy Director, Director of Research, MIME laurence.meagher@monash.edu

Review of MIME Stakeholders Meeting

The inaugural MIME Stakeholders Meeting was held on Tuesday, 27 October 2015 at Monash University Caulfield Campus. The meeting was attended by senior members of the University, clinicians, researchers, government representatives, the CSIRO and key industry partners. Much enthusiasm and support from the participants was demonstrated, creating a successful forum to plan MIME's strategic initiatives moving forward and allowing for participants to help shape the future of MIME. A key feature was presentations from two of the successful MIME seed fund project teams.

2015 MIME Showcase Event

We invited 20 senior executive, industry, finance and legal leaders to the first MIME ‘Showcase Event’ on Thursday, November 12 at the Monash Law Chambers in the City of Melbourne. The event was organised by Mr Ed Smith, the Monash Advancement Office and MIME staff. The aim was to highlight MIME and the medical technologies that are being developed by our researchers. We hope that this type of meeting will generate philanthropy or investment in MIME projects. We plan to hold these Showcase events at least once a year.

At this event we were fortunate to have the Professor Frieder Seible, Dean of Engineering and Mr Peter Rogers, Chair of the Monash Engineering Foundation speaking about MIME. We also had three presentations from the Director MIME, Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld on progress in developing the Monash Bionic Vision Device, Professor David Kaye, Senior Cardiologist and Researcher at the Alfred Hospital and the Baker IDI Institute on the community burden of heart disease and new heart devices that he is developing and Professor Paul Fitzgerald from the Alfred Psychiatry Research Institute on a new device he is developing using trans-cranial magnetic stimulation to potentially treat patients with depression and other psychiatric illness. The invited guests showed a great deal of interest in MIME by the questions they posed after the presentations and in the productive informal discussions with MIME staff over wine and cocktails after the event.

Outcome of the 2015 MIME Travel Scholarships

We received a large number of applications for the 2015 MIME Travel Grant Program. The travel grant program was open to PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and early career researchers working on projects that involve medical technologies. The final result was that 20 grants valued at $2,500 were awarded to be used to cover costs towards international conference attendance, visits to key groups for further learning, career development and to establish networks and collaborations with high profile international research groups.

We thank all participants who submitted an application for their time and effort. We extend our congratulations to the successful applicants listed in the table below and look forward to receiving your report after your travel.
